As we move further into the 21st century, the care work industry is evolving at a rapid pace. New technologies, changing demographics, and shifting societal values are all having an impact on how we approach care work. What’s more is that these changes are only set to accelerate in the coming years.

In this article, we will explore some of the key trends and predictions for the future of care work, and what they mean for both caregivers and care recipients.

The care industry has always been an essential part of our society, providing vital services to those in need. However, the past few decades have seen significant changes in the way that care work is carried out, with a shift towards professionalisation and a focus on quality of care. This trend is set to continue in the coming years, with a range of new technologies and approaches set to revolutionise the industry.

Trends in Care Work

Ageing Population

One of the most significant trends in care work is the ageing population. As more and more baby boomers reach retirement age, the demand for care services is set to skyrocket. This demographic shift is placing a strain on the current care work infrastructure, and there is an urgent need for new approaches to meet the needs of this growing population.

Professionalisation

Another trend in care work is the increasing professionalisation of the industry. There is a growing recognition of the importance of providing high-quality care, and this has led to the development of new training programs and certification processes. This trend is set to continue, with more emphasis on standards of care and the qualifications required to work in the industry.

Technology

Advances in technology are also having a significant impact on care work. From wearable health monitors to virtual care services, new technologies are making it easier to provide care from a distance. This is particularly important for those living in remote areas or with limited mobility. Additionally, technology is helping to improve the efficiency and accuracy of care work, reducing the workload on caregivers and improving the quality of care provided.

Diversity and Inclusion

The care work industry is becoming more diverse and inclusive, with a greater emphasis on cultural competency and sensitivity to different backgrounds and lifestyles. This is important for ensuring that all care recipients receive the best possible care, regardless of their background. This will increasingly be considered through the lens of care delivery, with the holistic approach using frameworks such as PIES enabling the delivery of this to clients.

Increased Use of Robotics

As technology continues to advance, we are likely to see an increased use of robotics in care work. This could include robotic companions for the elderly or those with disabilities, as well as robots that can perform routine tasks such as cleaning and cooking. While there are some concerns about the impact of robotics on the care work industry, they could also help to alleviate some of the strain on caregivers and improve the quality of care provided.

More Emphasis on Mental Health

The care work industry is beginning to recognise the importance of mental health, and this trend is set to continue in the coming years. This could include more training and resources for caregivers to help them provide support for those with mental health conditions, as well as greater emphasis on early intervention and prevention.

Greater Collaboration

Collaboration is likely to play an increasingly important role in the care work industry in the future. This could include greater collaboration between healthcare providers, social services, and community organisations to provide more holistic care for those in need. Additionally, there may be greater collaboration between caregivers and care recipients, with a focus on shared decision-making and a more person-centred approach.

Greater Flexibility

The future of care work is likely to be more flexible, with a greater emphasis on meeting the individual needs of care recipients. This could include more flexible work arrangements for caregivers, as well as greater use of telehealth and other virtual care services to provide care on-demand. This will be particularly important for those living in rural or remote areas, or for those with mobility issues.

Personalised Care Plans

In the future, we can expect to see more personalised care plans for individuals receiving care. This could include the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyse data and create more customised care plans. By tailoring care to the individual needs of each person, we can ensure that they receive the best possible care and support.

Better Professional Development

Professional development in the care sector is vital for maintaining high-quality care and support services. Continuous learning and upskilling ensure that care professionals can adapt to evolving needs and implement the most current best practices in their field. From understanding the intricacies of specific health conditions to mastering new care technologies, every aspect of professional development contributes to the delivery of person-centred care. In addition to formal qualifications, opportunities such as in-house training, workshops, and seminars enable care professionals to expand their skill set and grow their careers. Importantly, a culture that values professional development also helps attract and retain motivated and dedicated staff, ultimately enriching the lives of those they care for.

Care Work FAQs

What is care work? Care work refers to a range of services that support the physical, emotional, and social needs of individuals who require assistance with activities of daily living. This can include older adults, people with disabilities, and those with chronic health conditions.

What is the future of care work?

The future of care work is likely to be characterised by increased use of technology, greater collaboration between healthcare providers, social services, and community organisations, and more personalised care plans for individuals receiving care. Putting values at the centre of social care will help guide the rapid technological improvements we foresee in the care sector.

How will technology impact care work in the future?

Technology is likely to have a significant impact on care work in the future, with increased use of robotics, telehealth, and other virtual care services. These technologies have the potential to improve the efficiency and accuracy of care work, as well as to provide care to those in remote or rural areas.

How can we ensure that care work is inclusive and culturally sensitive?

In order to ensure that care work is inclusive and culturally sensitive, it is important to provide training and resources for caregivers that emphasise cultural competency and sensitivity to different backgrounds and lifestyles. Additionally, care plans should be tailored to the individual needs of each person, taking into account their unique cultural and social circumstances.

What is the most important trend in care work?

One of the most important trends in care work is the increasing professionalisation of the industry. This includes a focus on standards of care and the qualifications required to work in the industry, as well as greater recognition of the importance of providing high-quality care.

Questions to Ask When Choosing a Care Provider For A Loved One

Entrusting the care of a loved one to a home care provider can be a daunting and emotional decision. With so many options available, it’s essential to ensure you choose the right provider for your loved one’s specific needs. To help you make an informed choice, we’ve compiled a list of the top questions to ask when considering an elderly home care provider.

What care services do you provide?

Different home care providers offer a variety of services. Some may focus on personal care and support with daily living activities, while others may also provide specialised care for specific health conditions. Ensure the provider offers the services your loved one requires, including care for the elderly, respite care, overnight care, or care for independent living.

How do you assess and develop personalised care plans?

A personalised care plan is crucial to delivering tailored, high-quality care. Ask the provider how they assess clients’ individual needs and preferences, and how they collaborate with clients, their families, and healthcare professionals to develop customised care plans.

What qualifications and training do your care staff have?

The quality of care your loved one receives is directly linked to the qualifications and training of the care staff. Inquire about the provider’s hiring process, their requirements for care staff qualifications, and the training programs they offer to ensure their staff are well-equipped to deliver exceptional care.

How do you ensure the quality and continuity of care?

Consistency in care is essential to maintaining your loved one’s well-being and building trust between clients and care staff. Ask the provider about their procedures for care staff assignments and their approach to ensuring continuity of care.

Can care plans be adjusted over time?

As your loved one’s needs change over time, their care plan should be flexible and adaptable. Find out how the provider reviews and updates care plans to ensure they continue to meet clients’ changing needs and preferences.

What measures do you have in place to ensure client safety and well-being?

Safety and well-being should be a top priority for any home care provider. Ask about their safety protocols, risk assessment procedures, and how they address potential issues to ensure the ongoing safety and well-being of their clients.

How do you communicate with clients and their families?

Transparent communication is essential to keeping loved ones informed and engaged in the care process. Ask the provider about their communication methods, including how they keep families updated on their loved one’s care and how they address any concerns or issues.

How do you handle emergencies and unexpected situations?

Emergencies and unexpected situations can arise at any time. Ensure the provider has a clear plan in place for handling emergencies, including backup care staff and protocols for contacting healthcare professionals or family members.

What are the costs associated with your services?

Understanding the costs of home care services is crucial when making a decision. Ask for a detailed breakdown of the fees and any additional costs that may arise. It’s also worth inquiring about any financial assistance or funding options available.

Can you provide references or testimonials from current or past clients?

Hearing about the experiences of others can provide valuable insight into the quality of care a provider delivers. Ask for references or testimonials from current or past clients to gain a better understanding of what you can expect from the provider.

Making the Right Choice for Your Loved One

By asking these essential questions, you can gather the information needed to make an informed decision when choosing a home care provider for your loved one. Remember, the goal is to find a provider who can deliver compassionate, professional, and personalised care, ensuring your loved one can continue to live a fulfilling and independent life in the comfort of their own home.

How Respite Care Services Are Helping Carers and Their Loved Ones

Caring for a loved one can be a rewarding experience, but it can also be physically and emotionally draining. When you’re busy providing care for someone else, it can be hard to find the time and energy to care for yourself. Fortunately, respite care services can help you balance caring for yourself with caring for your loved one.

Respite care is a type of care that is designed to give carers a break from their caring responsibilities. This type of care can be used to support certain aspects of care for a loved one or to give the carer a much-needed break.

Supporting People Who Care

One of the main benefits of friends and family providing care for their loved ones is the sense of purpose and fulfilment it brings. When you are caring for someone you love, you are able to see the positive impact your actions are having on their life. Additionally, caring for a loved one can bring you closer together and help you build stronger relationships.
Another benefit of providing care for a loved one is the cost savings. In-home care services can be expensive, and by providing care yourself, you can save money on these services. Additionally, many carers find that they are able to reduce the cost of medical bills and other expenses by providing care for their loved ones.

However, caring for a loved one can be incredibly time-consuming and emotionally draining. Carers often find themselves neglecting their own needs in order to care for their loved ones. This can lead to burnout and can negatively impact both the carer and the person they are caring for.

This is where respite care services come in. By providing carers with a break from their caring responsibilities, respite care can help carers recharge their batteries and care for themselves. This can include anything from taking a much-needed vacation to simply taking a few hours to relax and recharge.

What Can Respite Care Services Help With?

Respite care can also provide support for certain aspects of care for a loved one. For example, if a carer is struggling with a particular aspect of care, such as bathing or feeding their loved one, respite care services can provide support and assistance. This can help the carer feel more confident and competent in their caring role.

Additionally, respite care can provide carers with access to additional resources and support. For example, respite care providers may be able to offer advice on how to manage difficult behaviours or may be able to connect carers with other support services in their area. Using training and techniques such as the 6 C’s of care, respite care can make the difference.

In-home care service providers in Essex, UK can provide a wide range of respite care services to support carers and their loved ones. These services can be customised to meet the unique needs of each individual and can include anything from short-term respite care to long-term care.

Short-term respite care can be provided for a few hours or a few days at a time. This can give carers a break from their caring responsibilities and allow them to focus on their own needs. Short-term respite care can also be used to support certain aspects of care, such as assisting with bathing or feeding.

Long-term respite care is designed to provide ongoing support for carers and their loved ones. This can include anything from a few hours a week to full-time care. Long-term respite care can be especially helpful for carers who need to take an extended break from their caring responsibilities, such as when they need to recover from an illness or injury.

Is Respite Care the Right Option For Me?

Respite care services can be a valuable resource for carers and their loved ones. By providing carers with a break from their caring responsibilities, respite care can help carers balance caring for themselves with caring for their loved ones. This can lead to improved health and well-being for both the carer and the person they are caring for. Respite care can also provide support and assistance for certain aspects of care, as well as access to additional resources and support services.

If you are caring for a loved one in Essex then get in touch to discuss our respite care services. Here at Anglian Care, we understand the challenges of caring for a loved one. We are committed to providing compassionate and personalised care to support carers and their loved ones. We work closely with people to create customised care plans that meet their unique needs and preferences. This can include anything from assistance with daily living activities to companionship and emotional support.

Remember, it’s important to take care of yourself, as well as taking care of your loved one. Respite care services can help you find the balance you need to care for both yourself and your loved one.

Employment Trends in the Care Sector

According to the most recent publicly available data, there are in the region of 1.5 million people employed in the adult social care sector in England alone. This is quite a remarkable number when you take into account the fact that there are 1.2 million people working full-time within NHS trusts and clinical commissioning groups in England. As many people who work in the care sector know, there are also many part-time workers, which distorts the figures a little. Nevertheless, the fact that more people work in the private and public care sector than in healthcare in England will come as something of a surprise to many. What else is going on with employment in this crucial – if often overlooked – part of the UK’s service economy?

Using Digital Technology To Care For Our Community

With such a large workforce, there can be little to doubt that – in England, at least – adult social care is a major employer. Further, while some sectors are moving over to automation to reduce their wage burden, there are not that many jobs in social care that can be performed by machines no matter how advanced they have become.
In 2021-22 there were a total of 1.79 million posts in the sector in England. Of these, some 1.62 million jobs were filled. Given the size of the workforce, it therefore stands to reason that some workers in the sector were holding down multiple jobs, perhaps working part-time with different employers, or indeed with private clients.
That said, the overall trend with filled posts in the care sector was downwards. Compared with the previous year’s statistics, there were 50,000 fewer posts filled than before. From 2020-21 to 2021-22, there was a three per cent increase in the number of unfilled posts among English social care providers. According to the most recent figures, this means that 165,000 positions within the public sector and social care companies remain unfilled. That’s up from 110,000 jobs in the previous reporting period. Overall, there is an increasing demand for social care workers with a growing problem of recruitment and retention in the industry to match it.

Pay in the Social Care Sector

In the private social care sector, median pay among care workers stands at £9.50 per hour at the moment. In England, the rate of pay goes up for a healthcare assistant (HCA) with two or more years of experience behind them. In this category, HCAs’ median pay is £11.30 per hour. However, HCAs who are new to their role currently receive an average pay award of £10.50. According to Anglian Care, a private social care provider based in Essex, pay is one of the keys to recruiting the right sort of care workers with experienced candidates demanding the highest rates of pay.

Without adjusting for inflation, the overall trend is upward for pay in the sector, bearing out the direct experience of many social care providers. As recently as 2012, median social care worker pay stood at £6.75 per hour. Even when you take into account inflation, care workers on average levels of pay were better off by 16 per cent in March 2022 compared to the comparable rate of pay in September 2012.

VR Adoption Increasing Across the Board

Although the social care sector is a diverse one, there are some trends that mark it out from other industries. As has been the case for many years, the majority of workers in the sector continue to be female. According to the latest information available, the workforce is currently made up of around 82 per cent of female workers. In addition, the sector has a workforce with an average age of 45. Given that over a quarter of employees in the care industry are aged 55 or more – and, therefore, approaching retirement age – it may be that the sector is facing a problem with recruitment among younger workers – both male and female.

Whether this is down to starting pay, a lack of support getting people into care work or from other issues is something the care sector will have to think about if it is to fill the vacancies it already has as older workers begin to leave the industry. Given that 358,000 of the currently filled posts in the sector are jobs conducted by care workers who are on zero-hours contracts, the issue of employee job security is likely to be playing a part in the challenge of recruitment and retention in the sector to say the very least.

How Does The CQC Rate Independent Care Providers?

At Anglian Care, we take a great deal of pride in our person-centred care. Everything we do in the homes of the people we look after is tailored to their particular circumstances and care needs. We understand that our service users’ needs change over time too, which is why we review our care plans to make sure they are supporting people when and where they need it.
When it comes to quality care, we have many positive testimonials from people and the families of people we look after. We always do our best to deliver high-quality home care throughout Essex.

In addition to reviews from the people we help, we are also officially inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). In England, the CQC is in charge of assessing independent care providers like us.

The UK government has recently announced a major review of how social care and healthcare services are delivered in England. This will necessarily cover some of the ground that is already part of the CQC’s responsibilities. When the review report is published, we’ll know more about the role of the CQC and whether anything will change. For now, the most important thing to know is that the CQC inspects care providers in the independent sector, like us, as well as those in the public sector. Both types of care provision are measured by the same set of criteria. In other words, public social care is not held to a different standard than private care and both parts of the industry are expected to deliver the sort of compassionate and person-centred care that we do.

How Are Standards Measured Across Different Care Providers?

Of course, given that organisations in social care work differently from one another and with different sorts of client groups, there is no single set of criteria for care providers to meet. According to the CQC, to ensure there is fairness across the board with different social care providers, what their inspectors do is look for rating characteristics that are relevant to the provider concerned. These should take into account the best practices and recognised guidelines for the people being cared for. In short, they don’t come in with a clipboard and a checklist to see how many things they can tick off. Rather, they focus on the sort of care that is actually being given.
The CQC says that a service provider in any given location – within its own facility or in the homes’ of care recipients – does not have to demonstrate every care characteristic within a given rating guideline for it to give the relevant rating. For example, if a service provider were to demonstrate that it was ‘good’ in several areas of care that it delivers but just one of the characteristics of its care were to be deemed as ‘inadequate’, then it could lead to a lower overall rating.

In fairness, for this to happen, the inadequate characteristic would need to have a ‘significant impact’ on the quality of care being given or on care recipients’ experiences. To put this another way, independent care providers like Anglian Care must show that they have high standards across the board in all of the types of care services they provide. If we were to fail in one area, then this could affect our overall CQC rating across the board despite being operationally outstanding in other areas.

At first glance, the way CQC rates care providers may seem a little harsh or even unfair. However, we are talking about care here, not some other type of impersonal service provision. As such, it is entirely right that all care providers are held to the highest standards in all that they do. Furthermore, it is also right that service providers keep abreast of the latest industry best practices and push for ever-higher standards of care.
Please note that the CQC rates care providers using a four-point scale. As such, all social care providers are classed as outstanding, good, requiring improvement or inadequate. We’re really proud to say that our Chelmsford branch was recently rated as Good in our CQC report.

How VR Has Evolved To Be A Great Training Tool For Care Staff

Virtual reality (VR) technology has been around for much longer than you might think. Systems like the Sensorama were developed as far back as the 1950s to provide a lifelike form of entertainment. However, it was not until the advent of the digital age that people started to think about the possible uses for VR outside of games and entertainment. By the early 1990s, NASA was using its own computerised VR system to train its astronauts. These days, VR is used in many professional fields. It is used to train firefighters in simulated blazes, for example. In addition, many professional healthcare institutions use VR training systems to help doctors and nurses to keep their skills up to date. It is now poised to revolutionize CPD (continuous professional development) in social care.

Using Digital Technology To Care For Our Community

At Anglian Care, we are proud of our uptake of digital technology. It helps us to keep our clients’ care plans up to date and to share information in a safe and secure way. We also use it to help our care workers do their jobs in a more efficient manner without having to rely on a paper-based system or coming into the office all of the time. That’s part of the reason why we are pairing up with another company to deliver some Virtual Reality dementia training.

Virtual Reality Training For Our Staff

For the team at Anglian Care, it makes perfect sense to make use of VR for this sort of training because it makes for a much more immersive and realistic experience. This is quite a novel idea still within the care sector so we are proceeding in a way that we are sure others will follow in time. Of course, VR technology isn’t only used for specialist work, like dementia training, because it has a raft of other uses in the care sector today, as well.

For one thing, VR training has already been shown to be a highly effective countermeasure in dealing with the spread of infections. A study that was funded by the UK government a couple of years ago looked into the specific benefits that might be gained in infection control in care settings if VR was deployed. The study was a timely one because it dealt with hand-washing routines and the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) just as the global healthcare emergency was taking hold.

What the researchers found was that those who underwent training that was assisted by VR systems would improve their understanding of infection control measures by as much as 76 per cent compared with a control group who had normal training. Perhaps even better, the study concluded that knowledge retention of the relevant health and safety guidelines surrounding infection control rose by a stunning 230 per cent when VR was used.

This particular research programme used a group of 50 carers who had not previously undergone such training. Simulations were created at Southmead NHS Hospital and Torbay NHS Hospital to assess how well the volunteers in the research performed after their training. Clearly, VR had a big part to play in how successful the training was because the results were so different when compared to the control group. Of course, this is just one study but it points to the effectiveness of VR as a learning aid. Simply put, people who are trained using this sort of technology feel closer to the sort of experience they’d have caring in the real world. As such, knowledge and good working practices tend to stick that much better.

VR Adoption Increasing Across the Board

It is not just physical or procedural training that can be boosted by VR either. One London Borough is already rolling out VR training for its social care staff. The London borough of Hillingdon began using VR to help carers learn more about autism in 2019. The VR tool the local authority has been using seems to work, too. By far the majority of people who have been trained in autism awareness using the VR system report that they think that it offered them further insights into the condition, something that would, in turn, lead to them considering how best to alter their approach with autistic people in their care.

The South-London based mental health foundation, the Maudsley Charity, also makes use of VR training. It says that there are multiple advantages of using VR, for example, allowing staff to deal with unfamiliar or challenging situations in a safe, virtual environment. They also advocate for VR as a way of enhancing critical thinking and decision-making in the care sector. That’s something that rings true from our use of technology in dementia care training, too.

At Anglian Care, we offer top-quality care to elderly people throughout much of Essex. What’s more, we do this in a reliable way in people’s own homes. If you have an elderly parent living in the area, then we can also offer them a dependable in-home care service to take some of the pressure off the rest of the family.

As leading operators in the care profession, we understand that dealing with changing care needs for an elderly parent isn’t always easy even if you, as the adult child of an ageing person, want to undertake much of the care work yourself. Under such circumstances, how can our in-home care provision help? Read on to find out.

Respite Care For Elderly Care Recipients

If you are the main carer for one or both of your ageing parents, then it can sometimes seem like a continuous amount of work to get through. This is when our respite care services can be so beneficial.

They allow you some time for a break to recharge your batteries, to look after another family member who needs it or to undergo some treatment yourself. We specialise in elderly and geriatric care, employing skilled care workers so you can trust us to take care of your parent(s) when you can’t be there for whatever reason.

In-Home Overnight Care Services

Providing 24-hour care services to your parent in their home is never easy. Indeed, it can even be unsustainable in the long-term especially when care needs at night time become more demanding. This is when our in-home overnight care can make such a difference.

We will take care of the overnight requirements so you can get some well-earned rest and be ready to take over the following morning. Our overnight care can be delivered 365 days a year or just when it is needed most, perhaps at the weekend when special arrangements need to be put in place.

Live-In and Palliative Care in Essex

For elderly relatives, including parents who are ageing, Anglian Care provides a comprehensive array of live-in care services. Often procured when someone in the family requires 24-hour care, we can tailor our service to meet the specific requirements of the individual concerned.

Like all of the other options we offer, our live-in care arrangements are designed to offer dignity so that an elderly parent can continue to reside in the home they know and love for as long as possible. The same goes for our palliative care which can be offered either as a daily visit or with a dedicated, live-in carer as required.

Private and Council Funded Elderly Care

As a trusted care provider in Essex, we work both privately for families as well as with clients who are in receipt of local authority funding. Either way, you can expect our care to be delivered to the highest standard. Your elderly parent can even nominate you as someone who is allowed to track their care as it is received remotely.

We have an app that provides just this service, offering you complete peace of mind that the care on offer is being delivered on time, in full and in accordance with the agreed care plan. Why not talk to us today to see how our elderly care services might be adapted to meet your parent’s needs?

A career in the care sector can be one of the most profoundly rewarding things to do with your life. Although this profession is undoubtedly not for everyone – because it makes emotional and physical demands – it is something that some people are drawn to because it gives them a true sense of purpose in their working lives.

Few other jobs mean giving to and helping others in quite the same direct way as being a care worker. That said, there are multiple responsibilities you will need to take on board about care work. If you are considering training to become a care worker or would like to retrain so you can move into this line of work, then it is worth bearing in mind that there are multiple routes into the profession. Many care companies will aim to support you as you take the necessary steps. One of the most important things to take on board from an early stage, however, is what sort of responsibilities you will be expected to handle as a care worker.

Read on to find out more about what the job entails and how responsible employers, like Anglian Care, can help you to discharge your responsibilities properly by using the latest tools such as Ask Emma’s virtual care manager service.

In-Home Care Delivery

At Anglian Care, we provide in-home care to people. This means taking responsibility not just for people’s care needs but for delivering services with respect in their own homes. The ability to get to care appointments promptly is important, of course.

When care is being delivered, it could be about taking responsibility for everyday help, such as shopping, performing household chores or even preparing a meal. However, in-home care delivery can also mean adhering to care plans that are much more personal in nature, such as helping people to wash and dress themselves. We support our care workers with care plans that can be updated at any time using digital technology.

Emotional Support

In many respects, care workers undertake tasks on behalf of their clients that they are not physically able to do for themselves. This sometimes comes down to ageing and sometimes due to physical disabilities or limitations. However, care work is also about supporting the whole person and this includes their emotional needs. Emotional responsibilities can sometimes be discharged quite simply with an informal chat, something that can stave off social isolation and loneliness, but it can involve other aspects of emotional support, such as addressing issues like loss and grief.

Healthcare Responsibilities

Although care workers are not there to provide the same sorts of services that trained medical professionals will, healthcare is an important part of care work today.

Sometimes, this might come down to taking responsibility for checking whether medications have been taken by the care recipient. At other times, care workers may need to apply topical treatments to those they care for. Basic medical training and first aid skills are a part of modern care work and policies and procedures are in place to help guide care workers.

Interpersonal Responsibilities

When you work in someone’s home, providing sometimes intimate levels of care, you will need to take responsibility for your own conduct first and foremost. However, interpersonal skills will also help you to take the necessary responsibility for the person you are administering care to.

Care recipients should always be afforded the respect they deserve. Moreover, this extends to friends and family members of the person receiving care. The Anglian Care app allows nominated individuals to follow the progress of our visits and to ensure all care tasks have been completed as they happen. Of course, care recipients are entitled to privacy but, if they choose to, then they can nominate others to advocate for them. This means care workers need to take responsibility for dealing with care recipients as well as those who advocate for them. Such interpersonal skills are particularly useful when delivering respite care or when live-in care is required for a time within a wider family context.

Professional Responsibilities

Care workers do not operate on their own without support and nor should they. This means that care workers must take responsibility for their own professional conduct.

Meetings with managers and supervisors should be conducted professionally, for example. Carers who witness malpractice should be confident to report problems because safeguarding should always be the paramount concern in any caring profession. As such, you’ll need good communication skills with your colleagues as well as other professionals you might come across in your work, such as social workers, podiatrists, therapists and medical professionals, to name but a few.

Discrimination in the care and helping fight it

In addition to the various responsibilities outlined, care workers must also be vigilant about recognizing and addressing any form of discrimination, whether it is directed at the care recipient or occurs within the working environment. Discrimination can take many forms, including but not limited to, ageism, racism, sexism, or discrimination based on disability. It is crucial that care workers take responsibility not only for their own behavior but also for ensuring that they are working in a discrimination-free environment. If any form of discrimination is witnessed or suspected, it is the duty of the care worker to report it immediately. Anglian Care takes a zero-tolerance approach to discrimination, and we provide clear policies and procedures to support our care workers in maintaining a respectful and inclusive environment for everyone. By staying vigilant and taking prompt action when necessary, care workers play a vital role in safeguarding the dignity and rights of those they care for, as well as fostering a positive and supportive work culture.

If you are currently in receipt of our high-quality care work in your own home, you will probably already have something of an inkling that Anglian Care’s frontline care workers are treated well. Unfortunately, this is something that cannot be said universally across the care sector although things are definitely improving for care workers. At Anglian Care, we have been providing in-home care services since 2008. In that time, we have always sought to offer our care staff all of the support they need. This is because it is our philosophy – in our very DNA, as it were – to provide high-quality and compassionate care to people in their own homes. How can we go about achieving this if we don’t look after our most important people of all, our carers?

We think that the answer is fairly obvious. Unless we are looking after our care workers, we are not equipping them with the tools they need to look after our clients. As such, it has always been something that we have focussed on and it is still central to the way we operate today. Of course, you might be reading this and considering whether or not to procure our care services. You might even be a care worker thinking about applying for a job with us. Either way, we know it is easy to claim we are a responsible employer that supports its workforce to do a great job without necessarily delivering. So, does Anglian Care walk the walk as well as talk the talk? Read on, because we think you will be impressed by how much effort we put into caring for our employees.

What Do We Offer Our Staff?

A High Hourly Rate

There is no getting around the issue of pay. In the past, the care sector is one that has traditionally suffered from low pay. This is something that we are pleased to say is changing as more and more people begin to value the crucial work that care workers do every single day. At Anglian Care, we are proud to have been ahead of where the care sector has been heading because we have always paid our carers a higher hourly rate than many care providers. Not only does this level of pay reflect the way we value what our care workers do but it helps to drive down on needless recruitment and retention costs. As such, we tend to keep our workforce for longer because they are happier and the cost savings we make can go back into what we all want, which is to pay care workers fairly for the excellent job they do.

Professional Development

Of course, we know that many care workers are not drawn into the industry because of money. At Anglian Care, we work with many people who have entered the care profession because they feel it to be their vocation. Many of the people we employ find care work incredibly rewarding. However, pay and being emotionally rewarded are not enough on their own because there have to be pathways to professional development, too. In other words, at Anglian Care, we support career progression, allowing and encouraging employees to further their skills, gain qualifications and to apply for managerial positions while gaining on-the-job experience. This makes such a difference to the way we operate and, consequently, the sort of service we can offer our clients.

Employee Benefits

There are numerous benefits our team members can take advantage of. For example, we offer free enrolment in NVQ courses in Health and Social Care as well as an annual Christmas bonus scheme that rewards some of the hard work that has gone in over the previous twelve months. There is a generous mileage allowance, too, an important thing to bear in mind when most of our carers need to be mobile and able to get from home to home under their own steam.

Empowering Technology

Finally, it should be mentioned what a forward-thinking company Anglian Care is. To that end, we have invested heavily in mobile technology. This now means we can communicate directly with our carers to provide extra information, update care plans and check on how they are getting on without forcing them back to the office all the time. This helps our teams to operate more efficiently while keeping the managerial contact and support that is necessary in place. It also means our carers can raise any issues they feel to be appropriate as and when they need to.

Our Community Engagement Day in Chelmsford

The team at Anglian Care was excited to be a part of a community engagement day in the heart of Chelmsford in January. Our stand was designed to raise awareness among the public of exactly what sort of work we do day in, day out in the community. As an in-home care service provider with an office in Chelmsford we thought it would be a good idea to set up our own stall at Chelmsford market to explain more about the sort of services we offer as well as the employment opportunities there are with us.

Our market stall was staffed throughout the day on Saturday 22nd January when shoppers were out and about in the city centre. We wanted to focus on the care services we currently provide among residents in our community, so that locals could gain a better understanding of just how beneficial in-home geriatric care can be. Our elderly care services help with so many care needs and individual circumstances that it is only by explaining what we can do for older residents face-to-face with them and their families that it is sometimes possible to get our message across. We can also provide respite care for caregivers as well as support for independent living.

Talking About Carers in the Community

The day in Chelmsford also gave us the chance to talk about what a rewarding career path working in care can be. At Anglian Care, we have vacancies for new and experienced carers that offer our employees great rates of pay and further training to help them progress in their careers. We were really pleased to speak with so many people about the prospects we can offer and running a market stall on a chilly January day was great for us to meet people in the area. After all, the wider community isn’t just made up of potential care recipients but friends, family and would-be care workers, too.

We enjoyed being able to chat to many people who might not have ever considered a job in the care sector before about the opportunities such a career change could offer them. That’s why it is so crucial that we put ourselves into the heart of the community on days like these – so we can explain more about life in the modern care sector and why it can be so rewarding.

We were delighted to have some special guests turn up to our community engagement day, too. We were pleased to be able to welcome Chelmsford’s Mayor, councillor Jude Deakin, as well as the Mayoress, Helen Deakin, to our stall. Mayor Deakin later tweeted about being our guest. “On Saturday lunchtime, the Mayoress and I paid a visit to the Anglian Care stall in #Chelmsford High Street,” the Mayor posted. “We chatted with the owners and staff who were promoting work opportunities with #AnglianCare as well as informing people about their services.”

Another recent innovation that Anglian Care has put in place involves the use of apps among appointed friends and family members. If someone receiving in-home care wishes to do so, then he or she can make their care status available to view by a trusted third-party. As the care is delivered in the home, so it can be tracked as it happens even if the other party is in another part of the world!

Not only will the app show authorised people when a care visit has started and ended but it will also detail all of the individual tasks that might need to be conducted as a part of the care plan. Again, each one can be digitally ticked off as it happens, offering loved ones a great deal of peace of mind that the in-home care they are paying for is being delivered in full.
